Old Point Comfort Lighthouse The lighthouse, built in 1802, is the oldest standing structure at Fort Monroe. It remains an active navigational aid and the property of the U.S. Coast Guard. The Assateague Lighthouse This lighthouse is located in the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge on Assateague Island. This is a newer version of an older lighhouse. The new Lighthouse is 154-foot tall, and sits on a 22-foot mound of crushed oyster shells donated by Chincoteague oysterman. The tower was fitted with a first-order Fresnel lens, displaying a fixed light visible 14 nautical miles. Picture by Jeb Buckwalter.

Newport Middle Ground Lighthouse This lighthouse marks the entrance to the James River and the area known as the Middle Ground Shoal in Hampton Roads. Wolf Trap Lighthouse This lighthouse is located just east of Horn Harbor, and eight miles northeast of New Point Comfort Lighthouse. A need for this lighthouse came as early as 1690 when an extremely large English ship ran aground shortly after entering the Chesapeake Bay. You can get the best view of the lighthouse from a boat.
